Explaining the reference to other gods in the first Commandment

ONLY ONE GOD

Is there only one God?

Though voting yes on this question, let us first consider what a god is, and then determine the relevance and complexities of this question.

God: “Superhuman being worshipped as having power over nature and human fortunes; deity; Image, animal or other object worshipped as symbolizing, being the visible habitation of or itself possessing divine power; an idol;”

[1]

Jews, Muslims and Christians all claim to worship the God of the Old Testament of the Bible, though Christians identify the continuing revelation of the O.T. God, Elohim, through physical manifestation in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The LORD declares He is GOD in Gen.1:1, where He states that He, singular, created the heavens and the earth, etc. and this is consistent right through the explanation, description of the creation. Another relevant Scripture is Jn.1:1&14

Next, in Gen.1:27 we read GOD created man, singular, in His, singular, own image. Without getting too confused with the previous verse, where God speaks in what is called the Royal plural, “Let us make man in our image…” we need recognize that the revelation of the GODHEAD is singularly the most important doctrine to understand, and is the root of most confusion amongst denominations.

This subject has been covered in previous writings, and is not the goal of this particular topic.

Scripture declares there is only One GOD, and, in the first commandment, HE stresses that HE alone is to be the object of all worship, adoration and praise. Ex.20:1-7; 34:14; are particularly relevant verses; “Take heed to yourselves that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside and serve other gods, and worship them.” Deut.11:16;

So, yes, there are other gods, other objects of worship, and we, as Christians, need take heed to avoid such deception, cunning traps such as trinitarian worship, which makes three gods out of One and is a pagan perversion.

Yes, we read also of the many other gods worshipped by heathens, especially in relation to fertility, both in stock, crops and procreation of the tribe. We can easily find reference in Scripture to a multiplicity of gods, and we read how often Israel got into serious trouble with GOD because of intermarriage with worshippers of false gods, and how violently and harshly GOD dealt with them for this grievous misdemeanour.

We find that the heathens worshipped gods of stone, of wood, of brass, and, without realizing it,
