by Steve Hansell

Created on: September 20, 2010   Last Updated: September 24, 2010

The Ryder Cup, October 1-4.

The PGA tour for October begins with the Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort near Newport, South Wales. The Twenty Ten course, named for this years Ryder Cup, opened in 2008 and is 7352 yards of challenging golf and fabulous scenery.

The Captain for this years American team is Corey Pavin, with assistant Captains Paul Goydos, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III, and Jeff Sluman.  The top eight players based on prize money automatically make the team; Phil Mickelson, Fedexcup leader Mat Kuchar, Stever Stricker, Paul Case, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Jeff Overton, Bubba Watson, Hinter Mahan, and the four Captains picks are Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, and Tiger Woods.

Colin Montgomerie is Captain of the European team and includes players Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, and Luke Donald.

The American team has won 25 and tied two of the 27 matches, and the Europeans are anxious to win to get the last four out of five in the win column. The Four ball matches begin Friday, October the 1st.

The Ryder Cup is played for pride and country, there is no purse for this event. They play for a trophy named after Samuel A. Ryder. Presented to the PGA of Great Britain in 1927, it is the only prize of the international match of professional golfers.

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, October 19-20

The most exclusive tournament of the year, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf,  tees off on October 19th at Port Royal Golf course in Bermuda. Worth watching for the course alone, the competitive golf will keep you in front of your set. This is one of the last big tournaments for 2010. First established in 1979, only the winners of the four Major Championships, including the Masters, get to square off for this 36 hole, two-day showdown of the years best players.

The players who have qualified for the 2010 Grand Slam are; Masters winner Phil Mickelson, who won the Slam in 2004 and placed second behind Tiger Woods in 2005; US Open Champion Graeme McDowell, British Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, and Martin Kaymer, winner of the PGA Championship for 2010, all three rookies in the Grand Slam.

The PGA is featuring an event in Southeast Asia in October at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic. They tee it up on October 28th.
