The “D” word
The loss of my sister on 09 August 2010 was not only a shock but left for many an empty void especially for her two daughters. Although, in their 30’s there is never a right time to experience loss. It’s something, which we all have to face and yet it feels so primitive to us even the intellects of the world. Moreover, with all of the knowledge and inventions we seem to have about life the feelings we feel as humans cannot be erased. It reminds us how fragile and vulnerable we are as beings as we succumb to those instinctual feelings of sadness, anger and or rage. Feelings, which cannot easily be erased when we experience someone, close to us who has expired.
That word “expired” continues to resonate with me as this was the first thing I saw written on my sister’s bag, which encased her body. It was also the last thing I kept recalling after the fact. I have often thought about this and the more I think of it the more I am reminded that everything we think we own or treasure in this life really doesn’t matter. As one contemplates his/her life, the one thing, which is absolute, is that we will all expire.
“Expire,” its like milk which needs to be consumed by a certain date or else it decays. The exception to this rule for humans, we are unable to predict when our expiration dates are. This is why I often remind myself and others it’s important to live the life you want to live to the fullest and do the things you want to do with hardly any regrets. I say “hardly any regrets” because it’s unrealistic to say we don’t have regrets although we can diminish the amount we have. Stay true to who you are and do not allow anyone to make you feel less than you are.
Most in society perceives death as something dark or otherwise the final curtain drop. Having this belief often clouds our perspective and blinds us from seeing that death is only an extension of life though it’s not the life we know. Whatever belief system one follows it describes to them what happens after death although I do not follow any organized system, I am inclined to believe in reincarnation. This personal belief is supported by quantum physics and according to this energy is never ending, always replenishing in different forms. Therefore, this system makes logical sense to me that we never
