A Non-Profit. In other words, a non-profitable organization, aka a Charity or a Trade Union, use social media because it is an easy way to get others to join in on their debate.
As with all charities and non-profit organizations, advertisement is nearly 100% free. Whether it's through mail marketing, brochures and leaflets, newspapers and magazines, the Internet, or television. Thus making it easier for them to forward their ideas and notions about their causes and issues to the public., who will hopefully join in and donate money, which, at the end of the day, is the main criteria.
Literature is and has always been the best way to get viewers to see and understand ones cause. And especially for Environmental Awareness. Everyone has their own ideas and concepts. Everyone likes to have their notions put forward and heard. So they will put their own word in. Nearly everyone reads the newspapers. Many people read magazines. And almost everyone watches television. Television, and now the Internet, are becoming more and more popular for Charities with letting people know about their Causes.
The main use of social media is through the social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Bebo, to name only a few, and many others that allow its users to interact with each other. The users of these networking sites very often use the games, particularly on Facebook. These games allow the users to give money. One of the biggest games on Facebook, FarmVille, is currently getting its users to give donations. These donations supposedly go to The Schools of Haiti to allow the Haitian children a chance at education.
Wherever you look on the Internet, whatever page you are on, there is always an advertising banner or button leading the viewers to a page to donate money towards their cause. And right now the main cause is environmental awareness. This allows everyone who sees it to be aware of the environment they live in.
It must also be noticed how this very site, Helium, does its fair share of social media. Every charity listed on its Causes and Charity page are using social media to raise environmental awareness.
Wherever you go, there will always be an environmentalist putting his, or her, opinion forward. Members of Environmental Awareness non profit organizations use often protest when things are not going their way. I suppose this is a form of social media. (A more healthier one at that...)
A Non-Profit will use social media to raise Environmental Awareness because it allows them to reach out and touch the hearts of the public.
