Should we stop studying Jesus from an historical perspective? This is a double edged question, to which the Double edged Sword need be applied, as It alone can clarify the topic.
The question can be addressed from either side with veracity, as, without knowledge of the God of the Old Testament, the God Who created the universes, the earth, us, we have no hope of recognizing and understanding the God of this day, the God of the Amen.
If we look at historical figures, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Julius Caesar, who ever they may be, we can only do so from an historical point as they are dead. Jesus Christ is not dead. He is alive and well, keeping things moving right along, according to His plan.
Christians are instructed to renew our mind, to keep going, keep learning the continuing revelation of Christ, Who is God, Who is Christ, as He, Jesus, is the fullness of the Godhead bodily, Col.2:9; the express Image of the Father 2Cor.4:4; Col.1:15; Heb.1:3 We are taught to grow in knowledge of Him.
As Christians, to whom the New Testament is written, we need have a clear comprehension of just Who Jesus is, what He is doing today, and how He is revealing Himself in this age. Jesus said, “Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life and they are they which testify of Me.’’ Jn.5:39
Yes, it is essential for Christians to have a comprehensive knowledge, revelation of the historical Jesus, yet, we suggest, it is crucial we know and recognize the Jesus of this day, and what He is doing right now, or we may miss the catching away.
The majority of Jews could not identify nor accept the fulfilment of Scripture for their day, although their prophets advised them to be ready for this coming of their Messiah. Only an especial group, an elect number, were called to recognize the move of God in their midst in that time. The Pharisees, Sadducees, etc. the religious leaders of that time, who were supposedly looking for the coming of their Messiah, failed to recognize the Scriptures of the O.T. relevant to His arrival, Is.7:14 particularly.
Is it not possible, that if we neglect to understand the God of the O.T., we, as the Jews, will be incapable of identifying Him when He comes to the Gentiles?
“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever.” Heb.13:8 shows the need for us to know the God of the Old Testament, the historical God, as, without this, we, as Christians, will have no way of identifying,
