“Oh my god! Someone famous is going vegan! We have to do that!”
Seriously, is this what's happened to America? The United States was a nation that was founded on the concept that everyone was created equally and we no longer needed royalty, so what do we see every five minutes? Famous people telling everyone how they should live.
Some over-paid actor makes some movie that helps “open their eyes” to the plight of some random endangered species and the next thing you know they're making public service announcement commercials on Tv and suddenly everyone else is aware of it. Or, they'll read something in a newspaper and announce it on a chat show (whether its their own or someone else's) and suddenly, there's a massive bandwagon of people ready to exactly as they say.
Here's some prominent examples:
A couple of summers roll by and it seems a little bit warmer than usual. No one makes a big deal about it. They apply a little extra sunscreen and drink some extra water. But, all of a sudden a former Vice President makes a “shocking” documentary that walks away with an Academy Award and everyone starts saying how terrible anything that might contribute to greenhouse gasses are, picket lines are formed in front of big corporations and everyone insists on getting hybrid cars. None of these things are bad ideas, but it's not like anyone could have come up with this on their own.
A sudden breakout of a disease related to cows breaks out in Europe and a prominent daytime talk show host says that she refuses to eat beef – especially beef from Texas. Since so many of her viewers can't have an independent thought unless it's conveniently placed under their chair, they start to do exactly what she says. This actually led to a law being passed in Texas outlawing anyone saying anything bad about Texas beef.
An actress that was famous for about five minutes in the 70's notices that some children in third world countries are without food and decides to be the spokesperson for a group that would gather up money to feed these poor unfortunates. Unfortunately, most of these countries are led by corrupt governments and the food has a tendency to either go to the upper crust or just rot on the docks. Meanwhile, this certain celebrity seems to be having no trouble finding food herself. Just think: for the price of one of her meals, you could feed a dozen families in one of these nations. And, it also detracts from one other critical problem: starvation here in the FIRST WORLD. Where's the all-celebrity song for that one?
There are countless other examples that you can find by picking up your favorite celebrity rag or watching one of the countless networks dedicated to these spoiled brats, but it all comes down to one simple fact: they are no different than any of their mindless viewers. There are no facts being presented by them that can't be found by doing some simple research. If it takes some idiot that gets paid to entertain for a living to make you aware that there might be a global warming problem, some animals might be dying too fast, the Rain Forests might be disappearing too fast, or that some people have less food than you, then you might as well shred the Constitution and start handing your will, your votes, and your money to these people. You've turned them into royalty and allowed them to do all of your thinking for you.
