Any of the wonderful woods, forests or countryside parks in the United Kingdom are great for autumn visits as the colours of the trees are a fantastic sight. Children will enjoy rolling or jumping in piles of crackling autumn leaves and the fresh autumn air will really put a spring in your step. Another great place to visit in autumn is Blackpool, as the annual illuminations take place from September to November and provide a wonderful night out for kids and adults alike. Indeed, there's nothing better than taking a short autumn break in the beautiful Lake District and experiencing the beautiful autumnal landscape, together with visiting the commercial seaside resort of Blackpool for the spectacular illuminations show and a genuine fish and chip supper!
* New Forest
A visit to the New Forest in the south of England on a crisp autumn day will provide spectacular views of red and golden leaves and autumnal heathland. If you're lucky you may spot one of the local deer or the ponies that are loose in the forest. Certainly the 145 square miles of land that the forest covers provides scenery and walks for the most discerning visitors. The local pubs and inns are welcoming and what could be better than sitting in front of a crackling fire on a frosty autumn day after a long and bracing walk in the forests? The New Forest is easily accessed from Southampton, Bournemouth or areas around London.
* Lake District
The beautiful fells, peaks, lakes and hills of the Lake District are well worth visiting in autumn. The beautiful leaf colours of the trees surrounding the lakes can look absolutely stunning. If you are lucky enough to have good weather you can enjoy a long trek across the fells crags and peaks of the area and really appreciate the bounties of the autumn landscape. With over 800 square miles of countryside the Lakes provide an outdoor adventure park that is hard to beat in the UK. Visitors will enjoy backpacking, canoeing and watersports or climbing.
* Blackpool
Less active people may well prefer an autumn visit to Blackpool for the annual illuminations spectacular. The illuminations take place between September and November and are a stunning sight - by car or for pedestrians. The Blackpool lights display stretches for six miles along the promenade of the seaside resort and illuminated trams also run up and down the seaside front. The spectacular Blackpool Tower is always a fantastic sight at the time of the illuminations and visitors to Blackpool will find plenty of activities taking place throughout day and evening.
