”Tonight Only the Metallicats”
As one of the biggest metal bands to come out of the U.S. Metallica have enjoyed an incredible career spanning all the way back to the start of the 80’s, and have helped to bring the rock scene forward into the lives of a huge number of people. Originally when the band first started out as with most bands they would play a large collection of cover songs lucky for them the bands that band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich liked were largely unknown British New Wave Heavy Metal bands that your average American listener would never have heard of. This meant that they could largely pass a lot of the songs off as their own. As the band grew in fame the original use of cover songs still remained a contestant in their live shows, with a few of the tracks being released as the Garage Days Re-revisited E.P. back in 1987. However it was in 1998 that the band released their first all covers album in the form of Garage Inc. which also marked the 8th album for the kings of metal. The title of the album was a combination of Garage Days E.P. and the song Damage Inc. from the Master of Puppets album. Inside the booklet that comes with the CD there are several other various concept names for the album most of which are takes on Metallica songs or famous album titles. The first of the CD's in this album is a collection of new cover versions of songs from artists that have in some way influenced the musical styling of the band. The second CD is a combination of B-side covers from their various singles throughout the years, and the Garage Days Re-revisited E.P.
How the "Cats" went down with the crowds
The album made it to number 2 in the US billboard charts however unfortunately it did not receive the same sort of success here in the UK. Several singles were spawned from this album as well, these were Turn the Page, Whiskey in the Jar and Die, Die My Darling. The highest placing of these was Turn the Page which charted at number 1 in the American rock charts.
The “Metallicats” Take 1
As far as the first CD goes there are definitely some classic tracks on it with my favourites being Die, Die My Darling a classic old Misfits track which is a real all guns blazing rocking track, Astronomy originally by the great Blue
