Advice on the journey of life

by Mary W. Matthews

Created on: September 18, 2010

First, and most basic, always remember that life IS a journey, not a destination. So many people obsess about the afterlife – will I go to heaven?, does hell even exist?, will I be reincarnated (and if so, as what?), am I saved (and if so, from what?) – that they forget about the NOW. No one ever lay on his or her deathbed and said, “I wish I had spent more time at the office” or “I wish I had spent more time writing nasty e-mails and posts and engaging in ‘flame wars.’ ”

The second basic to bear in mind can be summed up as, “You are what you think about all day long.” This is sometimes called the Law of Attraction. If you think all day long about getting rich, your life will follow a different path than if you think all day long about getting revenge, or becoming an Olympics-level athlete, or becoming president, or someday being a guest star on “The Daily Show.” If you spend all day long thinking, “I want to be famous,” you may already be Madonna or Lady Gaga, or whoever is the celebrity of the day. If you spend all day long thinking, “I want to be powerful,” you may already be Hitler or Stalin – or Karl Rove or Glenn Beck, or the president of the PTA, or whatever power it is that you want so badly. If you think about eating all day long, you’ll end up either fat, or dead of anorexia or bulimia. If you spend all day thinking, “I can’t do it,” you won’t EVER be able to do whatever it is. If you spend all day thinking, “No one likes me,” you’ll be lonely.

The third fundamental is related to the second: “You get back what you dish out.” Some people call this karma; others call it the Law of Reaping and Sowing. If you’re always angry, you’ll get back anger. If you’re always fearful, life will be full of scary monsters and perilous situations. If you never forgive insults or wrongs done to you, life will be full of insults and wrongs done to you. Remember Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Future? In Scrooge’s original timeline, he spent his whole life grasping after money – and then, when he died, he died alone with his money: no family, no friends, no loved ones. And almost immediately all his money and possessions were gone too.

Remember that the Universe does NOT do well with negatives. If you spend all day long thinking, “I don’t
