So, you’re becoming a father? Congratulations!

As most expectant fathers know, pregnant women go through a variety of emotions during this time. But, what most women don’t know is that their partner – dad to be, is going through his own feelings and anxieties during this exciting time too.

Most fathers to be may feel a little panicked, and overwhelmed. Dare we say even scared? Like any big change, this too will require some major adjustments, and most of the time, you’re just not ready; especially if the pregnancy wasn’t planned. But, don’t feel bad, you’re not alone.

It’s normal to have these feelings. However, you can take measures to get more comfortable with the pregnancy and the notion of bringing your little bundle of joy home. Knowing what to expect as a new father will help put your mind at ease.

Here are 10 things that every new father-to-be should know:

1. Helping During Labor:

Learning how to help Mom-to-be during the process of labor and delivery is very important. There is no rule that says you must cut the umbilical cord or even be in the delivery room. However, you being in the delivery room is very important to your partner, as you don’t want them to feel abandoned at this time of need. If you are squeamish and have a weak stomach, you can stand at the head of the bed in order to elude the “gross” stuff!

In addition, don’t worry about fainting, very few men pass out during the birth of their child. In fact, most men find that it wasn’t as bad as they originally thought.

If you’re still not sure what to do for Mom-to-be during labor and delivery, there are childbirth classes available through most hospitals through their education department. If you feel uncomfortable being in a group setting during this personal and private time of your life, there are also online classes available.

You’ll be taught an array of massage and pain management techniques, which you will be able to talk over with your partner to find out what each of you are most comfortable with. And, though the expectant mother does the hardest part during labor, Dad still has a crucial role. Looking out for your partner’s best interests is one of the most important things you can do during this time. It’s important to discuss your preferences in regards to pain management, medication and treatment, before the due date, so that you are informed on what to tell the health
