Creating good SEO keyword phrases starts by brainstorming keywords and ends by a four-step elimination process. Before we discuss how good SEO keywords are created, we need to define them. What makes good SEO keywords?
First, effective SEO keywords generate decent web traffic. Second, they are relevant to the website niche. Third, they have less competition. Fourth, they are either commercial or non-commercial depending on the nature of the website.
Brainstorming is the first step you need to take to create good SEO keywords. At this juncture, you need to write down all the keywords and phrases related to your website niche. For instance, if your website is about ‘web design’, then you need to list all keywords related to web design. This is an example of a list that you would come up with:

Web design tools

Apart from brainstorming keywords manually, you can use tools. For example, Google Keyword Tool will help you know your market niche keywords. All you have to do is to write ‘web design’ in the search box and click on find keywords. Then the tool will give you a list of keywords about ‘web design’. You can download it as an Excel document.
Another way to brainstorm keywords is to conduct a search on Google or Yahoo and then check the related searches. This is how it can be done:
1. Type the keywords on the search box and click on search.
2. Click on “More Search Tools” on the left.
3. Click on “Related Searches” under “standard View”. It will immediately give you the related searches for the keywords you typed.

1. Type the keywords and click on search.
2. Click on the small arrow pointing up and down that appears under the search box. It will give you the related terms for the keywords you typed.
Once you come up with a list of all possible keywords and phrases about your niche market, you need to start the four-step elimination process. There are four steps in this process: traffic, relevance, competition and commerciality.
