Basics of organic SEO

by B.J. Tolentino

Created on: September 17, 2010

As Wendy Piersall once said, "Google only loves you when everyone else loves you first". The concept of organic SEO is all about getting those love juices flowing. The problem is that, with billions of web pages on the Internet, getting people to love (or to even notice you) is a seemingly impossible goal to achieve. Some people simply muscle their way to get it while others are creative enough to try funky ways to get noticed. It's all up to you. But you got to learn the basics first...

♦ Keyword research
In SEO parlance, the phrase "organic SEO" is actually a redundancy. Wikipedia defines SEO as something natural, unpaid, organic or algorithmic.  At first glance, it would even be a bad SEO technique to use the phrase organic SEO to title this web page. However, when checking the number of page results attributed to it in Google (462,000 according to Google Wonder Wheel), it would make sense to write to a "poorly crafted title".

This in essence is the real value of keyword research. Getting into the mind of web searchers (and in this case; my competitors) is an important aspect of SEO. You'll never know the SEO potential of keywords and phrases until you use keyword tools to check for statistical figures. The phrase organic SEO may not be as popular as SEO (which has 203,000,000 page results), but it wouldn't also have that many competitors. Keyword research allows the SEO practitioner to strategically combine popular, less popular and niche keywords in a specific SEO campaign.

♦ Organic Link Building
Link building is the most difficult task in SEO campaigns. There have been many link building techniques developed over the years (including outlawed Black Hat SEO tactics such as link farming) but what is sustainable moving forward, is gaining organic backlinks from reputable websites. The launch of Google Caffeine and Google Instant has made it apparent that Google's algorithm is shifting. It is now clear that Google values real-time relevance more than "unreliable" link building tactics. They just don't want to rock the boat too much...

Link building also involves the practice of utilizing outbound links. This can be use to link towards another web page of the same website (internal link building - for ex. a related article on link building) or to another website (for ex. Matt Cutt's video explaining link building). It is important to note that internal link building is one way of making a site easy to navigate; not just for human visitors
