People with asthma often think about the things they can do to help their asthma but I would venture a guess that they rarely think about where they live. Where you live can have a dramatic effect on your asthma and both its frequency and its level of harm. Every year the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) will rank the top 100 places to live for those who suffer from asthma. In this article I will give you the top 10 countdown and you can learn more about these asthma-friendly places.
10. Boise, Idaho
With a population of 580,000 this is a larger city but not too large. It received great marks for good and pure air quality.
9. Portland, Maine
With a population of 510,000 this is also considered one of the best cities to live in by Forbe.com's most livable cities list. It has good air quality and there are also a variety of no-smoking laws. In fact, there is no-smoking allowed in any public places. This is helpful for those suffering with asthma because tobacco smoke can trigger asthma attacks in some people. It's almost always better to be safe than sorry.
8. San Francisco, California
With a population of 2,400,000 this is a rather large city. Normally, when you think of large cities, you do not envision it being a good place for air quality, however San Francisco certainly is. This city is the largest city on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's list this year. It also has an Asthma Task Force team that is dedicated to preventing asthma as well as managing current asthma situations.
7. Daytona Beach, Florida
With a population of 500,000 this is the smallest city on the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's list this year. The air quality is above average as long as you stay away from the Daytona 500 Nascar Race when it is held every year.
6. Palm Bay, Florida
This city has a population of about 530,000. This city scored well with pollen count as well as air quality.
5. Portland, Orgeon
This city has a population of about 2,170,000. It has good air quality and a few good non-smoking laws.
4. Colorado Springs, CO
This city has a population of about 610,000. This city has the highest elevation of any of the cities on the list. It is very good with air and pollen counts.
3. Minneapolia, Minnesota
This city has a population of 3,000,000. The air quality is above average but be careful. It can get really cold here which can be bad for some people suffering with asthma.
2. Seattle, Washington
And the population of Seattle is approximately 3,300,000. It only received an average on the air quality marking, however. This is mostly due to the heat rises each summer.
1. Cape Coral, Florida
This city has a population of 591,000. It was chosen as the number one place to live for those suffering with asthma. It can provide relief because of its constant temperatures. However, if heat is a problem for your asthma then you may want to avoid this city and the other Florida cities as well.
I hope that this article has helped you learn more about asthma and about those suffering with asthma. It is definitely an important thing to consider when thinking about where to live.
