When Rosie was born, there was an accident and she almost died. The umbilical cord, which had fed her while she in her mommy’s tummy, was wrapped around her foot. Her mommy cleaned her (like mommy dogs do) and began to eat the umbilical cord (also, like mommy dogs do). Rosie’s mommy thought her foot was part of the umbilical cord and bit if off! Rosie almost bled to death! But she was very strong and very brave. She fought very hard to live.
And so, that is how it was that Rosie came to begin life with only three legs. You would think that this would have made Rosie a very mean dog or a very sad dog. But not Rosie! She was very sweet and happy.
When Rosie was a puppy, she lived with Mrs. Grace at the puppy kennel. Her days and nights were filled with yapping and playing with her many friends.
One day, Mrs. Grace took Rosie and two of her puppy friends to school so all of the children could meet them. Rosie was so excited to ride in the car!
When she got to the school, she couldn’t believe her eyes. She had never seen so many children. And they were all smiling at her. She about wagged her tail off! Rosie tried to look her prettiest and be on her best behavior when Mrs. Grace introduced her to the children.
Several groups of children came to see Rosie that day. At last, it was time for the last group of children. They came in and sat down on the floor.
It was then that Rosie saw Her. A tall woman with a kind face was with this last group of children. Rosie looked at the woman and her heart felt warm. Rosie knew that this was the woman for her. The woman sat on the table next to Rosie’s box, but did not look at her. Rosie jumped on the side of the box, but still the woman did not look. Rosie whined, just a little and finally the woman looked over at her. The woman smiled! She picked Rosie up, talked softly to her, and stroked her soft white fur. The woman knew that this was the dog for her.
And then, their time together was over and the woman had to leave with the children. Rosie watched the woman leave. Right before she walked out the door, the woman turned and smiled sadly at the little, white three-legged dog.
Rosie went home and the woman went home. But they thought of each other everyday.
Several months went by, and Mrs. Grace decided that it was time to find new homes
