Tips for dummies: How to survive in business during a recession

Created on: September 15, 2010

We have been in a recession for several years now and it may not let up anytime soon.  The effect has reached every continent on Earth.  It is neither our first nor our last recession that will be felt in our economy.  So, how do we survive it?

Economic recession can be brought about by external as well as internal economic shocks and widening imbalances in the economy. Numerous ways can cause recession. Steps can be undertaken to avoid altogether this kind of economic scenario to happen. But the most difficult part is to recover from the impacts of this economic turmoil.

Believe it or not, some people prefer to act like hermits and lock themselves away from the outside society for protection.  Others hoard food, weapons and money away at their homes.  What does this all mean to the average citizen?

But if you are truly prepared, then you can actually prosper like never before during these trying times.    Most recessions last only a few years and on record one lasted 23 years in the United States.  Many people have developed great wealth during these times.  So how do we prepare for it properly?

It is imperative that you educate yourself enough in creating money-making opportunities that you don’t pass a good thing when it comes your way.  Investing is a proven money maker.  But, don’t let greed take over common sense.  Take fiscal constraints over your money especially if losing a job.  Live within your means and invest wisely.

Investing in you is even more important.  Reading to educate your financial mind can make the best impact.  We all have been told that it is important to not make the same mistakes that others have.  So, ensure you learn about developing multiple streams of income.  This way, you don’t have to rely on only one way to make a living.  Similar to a mutual fund where your money is invested in several stocks at once to help alleviate any losses in your portfolio.  The idea is to always have a positive cash flow coming in from several sources.

Some people do this by having rental property, additional jobs and even through Affiliate Marketing where you make money by referring a product to someone else for commissions.  Have enough of these streams of income going and you can actually proper during the recession instead of being wary of it.

Ensure that you pay off debt quickly and keep major purchases to a minimum.  Start a home-based business rather than a brick and mortar one to save on overhead costs yet still reap the tax benefits of running a small business.  Save, save and save.  Keep a budget and learn to entertain at home more often rather than going out.

Downsize you gas guzzler to more fuel efficient vehicle if you need to and consider going back to school to reeducate yourself with new careers and technologies that will better prepare you for your future.

Remember that relying on jobs, family or friends cannot be a guarantee, so always have a Plan B.  One truly can survive and prosper during the current recession.  Be prepared for the unexpected always.
