How to share text and files with Write.fm

Created on: September 14, 2010

From the creator of Task.fm, Write.fm is a simple web-based tool targeted to users who want to share files on the go. Anthony Feint first developed this program with the intention of sharing code snippets with other online programmers. Soon enough, it was so efficient, releasing it on the internet seemed like a good idea.

The best part about this service is the features. Here, less is more. It is the simple nature of just typing, attaching and sending that helps this online application stand out. Furthermore, there is no registration required. The service is absolutely free.

~ How To Use Write.FM ~

First time users entering the site will see a simple interface void of advertisements. What you're actually seeing is a big box where you can type in your notes. This visual is reminiscent of Windows notepad. To start, type in what you want or copy and paste your desired text.

As you proceed to add files, the visual button on the top right of the screen will aid you in the process. Choose the file which you want to share from your hard drive and send it. Depending on the size, the progress of your upload will be shown as a dynamic animation.

There is a maximum of 4MB in total size for your file shares. Any file can be sent and there is no limit to the number of files allowed. This is helpful when each recipient sends their version of a project.

Finally, notice that there is a link already assigned after write.fm/. This is your sharing link. You can edit and rename this link to something specific which hasn't already been taken. Try using a keyword to specifically define your share as this will aid the process of prioritizing the recipient's time.

~ On the Recipient End ~

As the recipient receives your link, they are able to edit the description you sent by pasting on more text. Not only that they will see the files you've attached. Think of it as cloud-based computing without all the fuss. There is no registration required to access the link so the service is absolutely free to use right away.

The only downside is you cannot save what you share. However, this problem is resolved through the link you are given which is a shortened URL anyway. Also, there is no password protection to the link you're sending out.

Anyone on the web who happens to type in your link randomly can see a shared link. Furthermore, the simplicity of Write.fm serves it's function as a quick online tool to share files in a jiffy. Users who are crunched for time will find it an invaluable asset.
