The best formula for your baby

From the moment that a mother finds out that she is expecting, she wants nothing but the best for her baby. Expectant moms agonize over everything from what they eat to what their baby will be eating after their arrival.

Store Brand VS Name Brand

The first thing to remember is that infant formula is food, Therefore, it is regulated by the FDA. All formulas, whether store brand or a pricier name brand formula have to meet the same nutritional standards. So, if price is your only requirement, your baby will get the same nutrition from a store brand as the would from a name brand formula.

Choosing The Right Formula For Your Baby

Make sure that when you are choosing a formula for your baby, that you choose one that is iron fortified. Most commercial brands are, but read the labels to make sure. Additionally, consult your pediatrician about your baby's nutritional needs. Make sure to let your doctor know if there is a family history of milk allergies, Celiac Disease, or just any food allergies in general since these can be hereditary.

In addition to the many different brands of formula, there are also different types of formula. there is powdered formula, which is the most popular among formula feeding parents. In addition to the powdered formula, there is also ready-to-feed (liquid) and individual, premeasured portions-either powdered or liquid.

Unless your pediatrician recommends otherwise, the best choice is to start with a milk based formula. When your baby is born, your hospital will initially start your baby on a 2 oz premade bottle of a name brand formula. You can usually request a certain brand if you have a preference.

Once you go home with your baby, you will want to keep your baby on the milk based formula unless the pediatrician recommends otherwise or your baby starts to have issues with the formula. Often times, if there is a formula issue, the doctor may recommend trying a different brand. While all formulas are regulated by the FDA, some babies tolerate some brands better than other brands.

Another thing to consider is different types of formula within the same brand. For example, Nestle Good Start has a milk based and a soy based formula. Within the milk based formula line they have two or three different types including one that is designed to be gentler on a baby's stomach. So, if your baby has issues with one type of milk based formula, try a different brand before switching to soy. Switching to a soy formula could lead to a lactose intolerance later in life.

Before switching to a soy based formula, check to see if the brand of formula that you are currently using has a lactose free formula. A lot of times, a baby who is gassy or fussy doesn't need a soy formula, just a lactose free version. Make sure you talk to your pediatrician before switching.

If your baby was premature or had a low birth weight, consult your pediatrician about the nutritional needs of your baby. Often times, a doctor may recommend putting your baby on a higher calorie formula in order to promote weight gain.

Powdered Formula VS Liquid Formula

Each brand of formula often has a liquid version of their formula. With liquid formula, you don't have to add water, so it is ideal for travel. However you need to keep in mind that you get less ounce-wise per can then you would if you got a can of powdered formula.

Liquid formula is regulated just as powdered formula is. In the end, it is a truly personal choice when it comes to what brand, what type, and how you will feed your baby. Always consult your pediatrician if you feel that there are any issues.
