Will technology take over the world?

by Elizabeth M Young

Technology, itself, seems to already have taken over the world.  It has surely taking over individual worlds of life, the worlds of governments and the worlds of just about every type of human pursuit, from the arts to zoology. With the understanding that the vast majority of technological dependencies require some form of electrical power, it might be possible for us to enter a "dark ages" era of society and life if there were ever to be any major power and electromagnetic disasters.

But in the absence of any catastrophic damage to the electrical grids or to the electromagnetic fields, we are all destined to lead lives that are dependent upon, ruled and managed by, and in search of more and more technology.

It is even getting difficult to have duplicate car keys made, thanks to electronic chips that are implanted in some part of the key's assembly. The chips allow the car to start, making the automobile immobile if a regular, chipless key is used.

Privacy is a thing of the past, now that whole databases are compiled with information about our identities, most of our activities in life and even our shopping and internet browsing. Fictional television shows, post Patriot Act, frequently include scenes where a sparky computer geek is able to find out anything about anyone, anywhere.

An exponential increase in security and surveillance camera placement makes it difficult to go anywhere in an urban area  without some record of our actions, movements and even behavior. With advanced facial recognition programs, it would take an incredible disguise to get past our visage being linked up with records that tell everything else that is important about us.

In the world of wars, terrorism, crime and law enforcement, both sides can be well matched in defensive and offensive technology that creates more damage, kills more efficiently and creates a larger threat. As soon as authorities get new technology, it seems that criminals eventually get the same or better technology.

People have to think of using technology to take over the world, because they will never do so without technology. In fact, they cannot possibly take over the world without using better technology than the resistance or the competition has. Even those who are successful at getting around technological tools of governmental restriction, command, communication and control must either know the technological loopholes
