My top 10 comeback yearnings

by Patrick Hurley

Created on: September 11, 2010

If I had a magic wand and the ability to bring ten things back to our American Society, here are the first ten things I can think of to do just that:

1. Animated animals in television commercials. One of the joys of being a kid was watching memorable characters charmingly portraying Madison Avenue. I can assure you these cuties are still easy to remember fifty YEARS later! The Hamms Bear, the Twix Rabbit, Charlie Tuna, the Vlasic Stork, The Sugar Crisp Sugar Bear and of course, Bucky Beaver. Only the AFLAC duck and the Gecko for Geico can match them today. Made you smile.

2. Child discipline. Is it my imagination or are kids more out of control than ever? I sat on a plane yesterday listening to kids screaming and carrying on for three hours. I survived that to make it to a restaurant where children were running around without any parent in the immediate area. Isn't there a way we can remove reproductive organs from certain mothers who are CLUELESS about being a parent with rules? Is it illegal to use a TASER on a kid? Scarier yet, this is our FUTURE generation...yikes.

3. Great movies. The Oscars are not only boring, they are IRRELEVANT. Hollywood has fallen in love with special effects and turned its back on great character development. There are exceptions, yes. But, remember all the great films of the 20th Century? In 1960, for example, "The Apartment" won for the Best Picture beating out, "Spartacus," "Psycho," "The Alamo," Elmer Gantry," "Inherit the Wind," "Never on Sunday" and, "Exodus." Pick any year up until ten years ago and you will see my point. We don't have great actors and great directing anymore, just incredible visual effects. Where have all the people movies gone?

4. Intelligent communication. Two main villains play a major role here. Bad language, (why have so many people fallen in love with the "F" word?) and computer shortcuts. Is it really that hard to SPELL the word, "are?" Is it too much of a hassle to type, "you?" r u a MORON? I miss intelligence in most areas today, especially in language. ARE YOU in agreement?

5. Better American made cars. What has been going on in Detroit for the past thirty years? How did the concept of QUALITY engines escape them? Yes, their cars are very pretty, until you own one for more than three years. The workers in Asia are embarrassing us. Do they work longer hours and have less intrusive unions than we do? Please make a comeback here and manufacture automobiles we can be proud of in
