Determining a true level of poverty

According to Wikipedia this is the definition of the word "poverty": "Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter, because of the inability to afford them.."

Who determines whether a person, a family, is considered to be in a state of poverty? Somehow, being poor strikes me as a relative term.

They say “beauty” is subjective, it depends on the person’s personal opinion of what and who is beautiful. I say the word poor is just like that. I find the word “poor” to be different according to every person’s viewpoint of what is poverty and who are poor. Some kids can’t afford to purchase brand new clothes or the newest gadgets compared to the other kids who are in the same bracket of social status.

I consider myself poor and our family poor. For simple reasons such as in comparison with my friends although we look well-off, we were not allowed to buy just anything we wanted. That is probably what Wikipedia meant for "inability to afford them". I don’t have a luxurious phone, a high-tech gadget, or anything that most of my friends and classmates had; in general… we are financially “poor” compared to them.

For others, I’m already blessed. I’m living a luxurious life. Somehow, when I’m thinking of those other kids especially the ones that were unable or under- privileged to study. Those kids or children who were not able to eat anything they want at any time they want to, I know I am so blessed to the highest level.

My parents strive to provide me with the most convenient lifestyle they can afford for my sibling and I.

Education, Home, Family, Security and Eat-All-You-Can Spree.

If you think you’re poor. Then try to ponder on things that you are blessed to have in your life. If you’re still able to eat 3-4 times a day. That is already a luxury, others are only able to eat once or twice and sometimes they go to bed without anything in their stomach, not even water.

Try not to think of the things you don’t have or you’re lacking. Do not want things that your parents can’t afford or things that are not really part of our basic needs. Whatever it is, its value will depreciate some time soon. Or work yourself and earn to buy this item you wanted. Or why not wait for its price to be cheaper before deciding to buy whatever that item is.

In this economic state it is wisest to spend WISELY.
