Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will significantly increase the traffic to your site!.  The purpose of SEO is to make your site, article, blog or blog post pop to the top of the Google rankings, naturally. 

There are other search engines, of course, that all use slightly different algorithms.  But Google has such a large market share the others do not matter in comparison.  There are two types of Basic SEO techniques that increase traffic: 

On Site and Off Site Optimization.  This optimization is also known as "Organic SEO"

I cannot overestimate the importance of using good keywords.  They are the cornerstone of solid SEO.  If you use good keywords with a 2%-5% keyword density and do nothing else at all you will do decently.  Keywords are simply that key!

Starting a site from scratch you should first decide what “niche” you want to target.  Find a niche that has a solid commercial aspect, acceptable competition and hopefully has products people are willing to buy.  

Once you have a good niche get a URL that really covers all topics within that niche and is set up a good URL for your page.  Good URLS and SEO can be tied very closely together.
