I do not think there will ever be a backlash against celebrities, or the celebrity culture. And I do not think America will ever get sick of them; love them, hate them, or love to hate them, yes, but we never get sick of hearing about them. Even I, who usually do not follow the ins and outs of Hollywood, am somewhat concerened about Britney Spears' state of mind (only for the sake of the kids, of course). I don't lie away wondering whether K-Fed would make a good full-time father (I have my doubts), but it does cross my mind occasionally. And I admit it, when I see Angelina and Brad standing side by side on television, I look up from my computer to see how they are doing. Also, there are some celebrities that have taken backlash and criticism and turned it around to a positive thing: Tyra Banks, for example, has launched her campaign to fight the media's obsession with weight after pictures of her were published claiming she had gotten "fat".
I think we watch the lives of celebrities for the same reason we watch reality tv: to see lives that are much more dramatic than our own. I certainly don't want to live that lifestyle myself; I don't want to be in and out of rehab, or party like Paris, or have a string of failed relationships like Jennifer...but I want to watch. And in an increasingly "celebrity culture", there is one easy thing you can do if you are sick of all the drama: ignore it. Get a job, make friends, go back to school...a normal life is just as fun as one in the spotlight!
