EMERGENCY ROOM
Degrees Fahrenheit: I arise
cold, according to mercury
but later burn. The numbers lie;
blood pressure, pulse rate: all lies.
What else must be measured? My age,
not how long I've walked on this earth
but the difference between now
and the year of my birth. I'm young!
Later I'll be old. Weight, blood, height,
all are taken. If despite this
they detect disease, injury's
recognized, diagnosis made,
more complex measurements are read
to prove me well, dispensable.
I may awaken dead, or cured
of all habits, therefore perfect.

I inhabit a lifetime of hours
Where forewarnings and prophecy
Are delivered unto me through parchment
My upturned visage
