Did you know that some research shows that if a woman has gum disease during pregnancy she has a greater risk of having a preterm birth?
And, pregnant women with gum (periodontal) disease are also more prone to have a low birth-weight baby.
How can this happen?
Inflamed gums can allow bacteria to enter the blood stream. These bacteria can circulate around the body and excrete substances called "toxins" which can interfere with the normal pregnancy process.
How can you prevent this from occurring?
Brush regularly (2X/day) and use dental floss. See your dentist on a regular basis for professional cleanings. Watch your diet. Food high in carbohydrates can cause increased plaque formation on your teeth which is a great home for these bacteria. Stick with nutritious foods and snacks like fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
