How to build rabbit cages

by Sam E. Jones

Created on: September 09, 2010

Of all the pet animal enclosures that you can build yourself, doing so for a rabbit is one of the easiest.

To build a rabbit cage, all you need is some lumber, some chicken wire, some nails to put the lumber together, and a staple gun to hold the chicken wire to the cage.

First go down to your lumber store, such as Loews or Home Depot and get your lumber; you’ll need eight 2x1’s all about two feet long, and your chicken wire, your nails (2 inch should do) and some staples, whether you have the gun or not because you can just hammer them in if you don’t. Also, get two hinges for the door, which will be on top.

Once you’re back home, all you need to do is construct a cube out of the lumber, and then cover it with the chicken wire.

To make the cube, all you need to do is nail one of the 2x1’s to the end of another, and then nail another perpendicular to the first. Then, do the same on the other ends of your original boards. Once you’ve done this part you should have a cube with not top on it.

Next, lay down four of your 2x1s on the ground and nail them together to form a rectangle. Then, screw or nail your two hinges to one side. After that, life your rectangle and lay it over the top of your cube, then screw or nail the other side of the hinge into the cube part or cage, making your door.

At this point, you should have a full cube with your door on the top and working by swinging up and down. The next step is to build a support for the bottom so it will hold the rabbits weight. To do this, cut one of your 2x1s in half, and then nail the remaining board diagonally from one bottom corner to the other. Then, nail one of your half boards to one side of the bottom diagonal board, then the other to the other. The end result should be a X, that will fully support the weight of your rabbit.

The next step is to connect the chicken wire to you cube so that your rabbits can’t get out.

To put on the chicken wire, first cut it into squares about two feet plus an inch or two so that it can bend around edges when you put it on the cage. Then, cut the wire corners so they too can bend around the edges.

Once you have your pieces, you next lay one fully across the top of your cube, bend the sides down, and then staple it in place on all four sides. Next, do the same for the other four sides.

Once you have that done, all you need to do is add some hay, a water bottle and a food dish, and you’re ready to put in your rabbit.
