The Kalashnikov Shot isn't for the feint of heart. A base of Vodka is combined with Absinthe, and Lime then for those of us brave enough, the shot is lit on fire. As always, be careful when making burning shots, try having them properly made by a bartender your first time out, better safe than missing eyebrows. A proper Kalashnikov has layers of the liquors in a 2 oz shot glass, before it's set alight. The end result is a shot with a heavy anise & floral flavour cut with the soothing tang of lime citrus.
As for the Absinthe, if you're living in North America you may be lucky enough to have Taboo Absinthe in your local liquor store. Taboo is a Canadian brewed genuine organic Absinthe with superior craftsmanship by Okanagan Spirits. The Anise really jumps out on this brand, but any Absinthe will do. The rule about never drinking Absinthe neat flies out the window here, yet the lime cuts it just enough.
Ingredients:
1 oz Premium Vodka (Kalashnikov, Russian Standard, Effen or your favourite brand)
3/4 oz Absinthe
1/4 oz Lime Juice
Curl of Lime Peel
Take a wedge of lime, and rub the rim of the 2 oz shot glass all the way around. Discard wedge. Pour the vodka into the bottom of the shot glass, followed by tipping the lime juice in on the back of a spoon. A thin layer of lime juice should be present. Also on the back of the spoon, pour the 3/4 shot of Absinthe on top of the rest. Garnish with the thin curl of lime peel.
Now comes the fun part. Taking a barbecue lighter (or long stemmed match), light the top of the shot on fire. Watch the flames, then extinguish and consume.
Enjoy responsibly.
Cheers!
