How to research salary ranges and benefits for a freelance writer

by Cody Hodge

Created on: September 09, 2010

If you are a freelance writer, you might be interested to know what kind of salary you can expect to make, and if there are any health benefits that go along with this. For most freelance writers, the range of pay is going to vary, and any benefits that go with the job are going to vary as well. However, just because these figures may vary, there is no reason why you cannot do an educated search for pay ranges.

In fact, there are many ways in which you can find out what kind of pay scale you can expect to have. One of the easiest ways to get a general idea of what to expect, you can go to a site like HotJobs and see what kind of salary you can have based on region and what type of work you are doing. You can also Google search a salary range depending on where you are in the country and what type of work you are doing.

Experience as a freelance writer will tend to give you an idea as to what kind of salary you can expect. There are differences between writing a few articles for a website opposed to doing consulting work for a client, or doing some ghostwriting. A ghost writer might make more than someone writing an article and hoping for page views. A consultant might make 50 dollars an hour or more, while an article writer might make a couple bucks an article.

The client will generally tell you what kind of pay that they are looking to pay for each job as well. This will give you enough of an idea of whether or not you can take the job or not. You can negotiate with some clients, but often time they will list a price and hope that someone will accept that price. You might also have a fee that you charge which takes the guesswork out of what you can expect to make.

When it comes to benefits, you would have to check with the person asking you to do the work for them. If you are working through a company you might be able to get some sort of health plan for the duration, but you might have to put a portion of the earnings toward buying your own health care. Luckily, this is all tax deductible for you!

Freelance writers know that finding out what they are going to be paid can be a confusing process. The best thing to do is to get an amount upfront and know what you are being paid. General data is nice, but you will do better for yourself by negotiating with the client first and then getting to work.
