The alarm rang, as it always did, but it was not really needed. The compass of the house was already up busily getting the kids clothes ready for the coming school day.
“Time to get up” she said in a moderately loud but somehow gentle voice.
As usual the first call didn’t make much of a stir, but that was OK because Mom had a secret weapon at her disposal.
“Kids if you want to eat breakfast you have to get up now”.
That was all it took to create a flurry of motion. In a flash both children were out of their parents’ bed. True, the cultural norm taught children should be put in their “own bed” but so what, half the world population had the completely opposite position. Anyway, the hugs kisses and giggling in the morning was all the vindication they needed.
Now, on this particular day the kids we exceptionally active and excited because of their weekly trip to the donut shop. They loved that. It made them feel warm and happy on the inside having this weekly ritual. Everything was done faster.
So, where was I? Lying in bed pretending to be asleep, stealthily listening to the flurry of the family, and relishing every sound. It wasn’t until they got ready to depart that any stirring came from over my way. The kids were getting their backpacks and mom was digging for her keys when I heard the following exchange:
Mom: “You know, it’s not fair, because when it’s Dad’s week to do the driving I have to get up. But, when it’s my week he stays asleep”.
Buddy: “Yeah, that’s why we can’t kiss him before we go to school when you drive”.
Pumpkin: “Well, that’s why we have to wake him up so we can kiss him”.
“Ok, that’s it” I say to their startled surprise “get over hear and give me a kiss”. And both children leap one more time on the bed to give me their special love. As they walk out the door I smile to myself. Can there be any sound so wonderful to hear as that of the happy family?
