Excitedly, Charles and Laura walked into the orphanage. Unable to have children themselves, they were finally going to adopt. As they entered the door, a very pretty Asian woman approached them.
“Hello, my name is Mary. You are Mr. and Mrs. Clark, correct?” Her English was almost perfect, though you could still detect the Chinese accent.
“Yes,” Charles answered, “We’re so glad to finally meet you in person. You said on the phone that you have just the child for us?”
“There is a little girl who just came in last week. Someone left her on the doorstep, so we took her in. She is only a few weeks old.” Mary spoke over her shoulder as she led the way to her office. Opening the door, she motioned them in.
“What does she look like? Can we see her today? When can we take her home?” Laura fired a series of questions, then clapped her hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry, I’m just so excited. You see, we’ve wanted children for years, but couldn’t have any. And now that we’re about to get a little girl, well…"
Mary smiled, “I understand. It happens all the time. I have some pictures here, and if you decide you want her, you can take her home next week. Most of the necessary paperwork was processed before you even came to China, but there are a few more pieces that are child specific. Those will be filled out today, and will take a week for processing.”
Mary handed a few pictures to Charles and Laura, and they looked at the little girl in the pictures. Big brown eyes, and black hair made her look distinctly Asian, but she was certainly a cute baby. “What’s her name?”
“You can name her anything you like, since we don’t know what her parents named her. However, here at the orphanage we’ve taken to calling her Meimei.”
“What does Meimei mean?” Laura asked.
“Little Sister.”
“I like the sound of Meimei,” Laura said, “What do you think, Charles?”
“Meimei it is, then!” Charles said heartily.
That afternoon was spent filling out seemingly endless forms, with Mary helping to translate the Chinese as they went along.
A week later, Charles and Laura arrived at the orphanage to pick up Meimei. Entering Mary’s office, there was another woman there. She was holding a baby girl. Mary stood, and reached out her hand. “Welcome, this is Yuanyuan, she is one of
