Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Clearly the most powerful document ever conceived and executed by man. Strict but malleable, incisive yet wondrous in its interpretation, the conscience of America was fashioned after the very first and greatest Declaration of Laws, the Ten Commandments. Those eternal commands from a Supreme Being have guided this country from its infancy to the position of highest rank in the Hall of Nations. When the Bill of Rights was added in 1791, the Constitution became a beacon drawing multitudes to a city upon a hill, words first uttered by Jesus Christ in the Sermon on the Mount and later emphasized by John Winthrop, one of the earliest Americans.
These Articles and Amendments form the very core of our moral and ethical body as a nation.
Now, one is being challenged. The First Amendment, which grants each person full freedom of religion, speech, press and right to peaceful assembly is being used against citizens in a unique and crushing manner. There will be an Islamic mosque erected near the site of the World Trade Center attack, aptly named Cordoba Mosque after Islam’s first major conquest of an Infidel nation. The sponsorship of this religious structure has a dubious background not the least of which the five million dollar cash purchase of the property. Claims are being made by the principals to assure Americans that this is just another center of worship for Muslims in New York.
With First Amendment guarantees firmly in place, President Obama and Mayor Bloomberg of New York had no choice but to come down on the side of those four cornerstones of our liberty. On one position is the Left, who has fought any religious public display, like a Nativity scene or a town playing hymns at various times of the year. What about crosses on public land or the mention of a deity on our coinage or bills? In the media, in Congress and in political arenas, embracing this mosque in the name of religious freedom is worldly and proper. Those on the right clamor for a cessation of what is considered an abomination to this country and those who innocently gave their lives
