“Hey, Mike, watch this!” Mark shouted to his twin brother. He was dangling from a tree branch about 10 feet above the ground. When Mike turned around, Mark dropped from the branch, landing on his feet.
Mike ran over, “That’s awesome! I’m gonna try!” Ten year old Mike scrambled up the tree, and got in position. Just as he was about to drop, their mother came out.
“Dinner time! You have 10 minutes to wash your hands and be at the table!” Sally called to her sons, then turned to go back inside. As she entered the kitchen, she heard the screen door slam shut behind them as they raced to the bathroom.
Having twin sons was fun, and they certainly kept her on her toes. Sally was glad they had a large backyard, or the boys could easily drive her nuts. As it was, summer was easily taken care of by the time the boys spent building their tree house.
Every year, Blake came up with a new project for the boys. He would help them get started on the first weekend of summer break, then keep them supplied with tools and materials. One year they had built a boat, the next, little derby cars. This year it was a tree house. The boys had begged about the tree house, but Blake had insisted they had to be 10 before they could build one.
After dinner, as Sally washed the dishes, she watched the boys playing in the backyard. The tree house was almost complete, with a floor and walls. The roof was partly up, and they only had a few more weeks before school started.
As they came in for bed, she heard them discussing their building plans. “Hey, Mike, what color should we paint it? Red or blue?”
“I think we should paint it camouflage. Then we can hide in it.”
“That’s a great idea! I can’t wait to tell Dad about it. Maybe he’ll let us go to the store to choose the paint with him!” Mark’s excitement was evident.
Sally smiled as she listened to the casual chatter, and the easy friendship her two sons had. She had always been thankful for the happy family she had, and it things just got better as time went on.
