Green, Not Just a Color Anymore.
Green. Going ‘Green’. Be more ‘Green’. Are you ‘Green’?
It is truly amazing how a simple word used to define a color from the color wheel has become the descriptor for a new methodology by which we strive to live our lives. We have become inundated with literature, advertisements and reminders advising us to ‘be more green’. However, many of us are curious what it means as well as where to begin taking the right steps to ensure we are in fact becoming more ‘green’.
Simply stated, the new definition of Green means to adapt our way of living in a manner that will reduce the overall carbon footprint we as individuals make on the environment. Basically it is our mission as a communal body to be conscious of what impact we have on the environment through our everyday decisions. Many of the choices we make on a day-to-day basis, with a minor adjustment in thinking, can easily have a better impact on everything around us. Small things such as not letting the water run continuously as you brush your teeth can save almost 12,000 gallons per person in a year. Most of us are unaware just how much ‘damage’ we bring upon the planet within the four walls of our own homes. Nor do we realize just how much we can benefit from making permanent, lasting changes.
In the average home there are over 100 toxic chemicals. Most of which are completely unnecessary and easily replaced by non-toxic alternatives. Using non-toxic chemicals to clean your home is one of the easiest and most effective ways to become more green. Generally, when cleaning at home, most of the chemicals used are washed down the sink. These chemicals then make their way into local waterways and waste systems. Not only are you exposing yourself, your family and your pets to the toxins, you are sending toxins directly into the environment. Many of the chemicals found at home have been linked to triggering asthma, inhaled allergies, and skin irritation in both humans and animals. Worse yet they have been linked to more life threatening illnesses and, despite warning labels, many of us still continue to use products that endanger ourselves as well as others.
It may seem challenging to change what has become habitual, however change is quite possible. There are many resources available that aid in making minor transitions easy and adaptable to everyday use. One resource is simply doing some online research. Another is talking with friends, neighbors or workmates about their efforts and ideas. When it comes to educating yourself on ways to reduce your toxic exposure at home, a local cleaning company specializing in all green/natural cleaning can help by servicing and consulting with you regarding the cleaning needs of your home.
