Poetry: My best self

Self

My best self is there for all to see

If only you know how to look

Little pieces of me

Telling the story of life

There are the crinkles by my eyes

There from years of laughing

Maybe one from a single sigh

The crinkles are the best of me

There is the scar from having kids

I wouldn’t trade it for the world

It is always well hid

The scar is the best of me

Above my lips are tiny hairs

They let you know I’ve lived this long

That I have breathed this earth’s air

The hairs are the best of me

Slightly calloused are my hands

I earned them from working hard

And from a love of this wonderous land

The callouses are the best of me

The wrinkles say it all the best

Each one a story I’m sure

Of living with too little rest

The wrinkles are the best of me

Hidden from the world’s gaze

Is a heart of good and kindness

Sometimes left in a broken haze

My heart is the best of me

The very best of me

If only you know how to look

Is there for one and all to see

The best that I can be
