Reflections: Defining family

Family used to be biological. I am living proof that family is choice.

I grew up in a Norman Rockwell kind of home. Small CT suburb, two sisters and one brother. They are my biological family and I do love them. But sadly feel like I hardly know them.

Growing up, I always felt different then my family. I never placed much concern on the things they seemed to value as being important. So when I got the chance to bounce, I grabbed it. At 17 I left the nest and joined a band traveling around the country. My family was shocked and disbelieving. And extremely non-supportive. I know they had my best interest at heart and were just plain worried about my choice.

Did I mention I never felt like I fit into this family?

As an adult, I have been blessed with being able to have my own "family" if you will. I live in a house with my best friend who I have made my real "sister". This woman taught me unconditional love, complete and unrelenting support and treasures me for exactly what I am...faults and all. My children grew up surrounded by loyalty, encouragement and laughter. As two single mothers, we were able to create a solid base for her children and mine. I consider this household and all who live there my real and true family. It's where I go to find my strength and identity.

So as you can see, traditional families aren't always by definition. Some of us have to create our own. We choose to make our own traditions. But it works and I thank God everyday to have been given this beautiful family and life.
