For the beginning freelance writer, a home-based business relies on your ability to create content and sell it to any number of markets. Whether you are creating traditional newspaper and magazine articles or generating content for the Internet, the success of your business depends on several factors. Supply and demand, cost effective production techniques, time management abilities and a realm of other business principles affect the home-based freelance writer, as much as any other home-based business owner.
There are positive and negative sides to all business endeavors, and embarking on a freelance writing career can be a risky business. For those who spend much of their free-time writing, however, while struggling to raise a family and hold down a 'real' job as well, the benefits of starting a home-based freelance business can outweigh the drawbacks, by far.
Working long hours, when you are doing what you love to do, does not seem so much like work. When you realize that this is what you would be doing for fun, in your spare time, you can appreciate the fact that you now get to do it all of the time. When work is fun, you may even forget that you are working at all. If you find that you are working long hours when first starting up a home-based business, keep in mind that you are your own boss, and if you do work "over-time" it is only mandatory if you say so.
Working from home is beneficial in a number of ways. You are able to spend time with family, even if it is only on lunch breaks and needed time-outs. You are also easily accessible to your family. Many parents who work outside of the home struggle with guilt over not being able to be more a part of their children's lives. When working from home, you may find that new bonds are formed with family members and that an increased sense of security results when spouses and children know that you are close-by, if they need you.
Working from home can cut down expenses. Even if your income declines slightly when you first begin a home-based business, you will also save money on things like transportation costs, food expenses and other work related expenditures. A home-based business can also save you money on income tax. Consult an accountant to find out what expenses are allowed as deductions. These can range from office space to a percentage of your utility bills.
