For years the electronic book market has been slowly becoming a more important part of the book market and for almost as many years there has been the question of the tipping point. A point at which electronic books become a big enough part of the market that publishers have to release them that way and that the price of the ebook readers will begin to drop. In addition to that there has been the question of which of the devices will reach that tipping point first and not only help make the ebook market in general but become the default answer for which ebook reader is the best choice, and if any of the devices on the market have reached that tipping point it is the Kindle.
The first point in this is the question of sales. And in this case the Kindle has certainly reached its tipping point on Amazon as there are now 180 kindle books sold for every 100 hard back books sold, and Amazon has now sold more books on kindle that hardback books. These two statistics means that Amazon is certainly not going to be turning away from the Kindle any time soon as it has certainly reached its tipping point for them.
The second question is the price. The truth is that for most people the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for a device that lets them read books they could already read without one. On the other hand as the price nears a hundred dollars it becomes a far more reasonable investment as people are able to actually begin to pay for the device in the small savings you get for books making it simply a device that saves room and makes thing more convenient.
The third part of the tilting point is market awareness and penetration. This is where Amazon has done a good job with this, not only be making the Kindle one of the top devices but by making certain that you can read kindle books on the iPad, iPhone and the many Android devices and making the apps that allow this some of the best of the reading experiences. This means that even if you do not currently own a kindle there is a good chance if you like to read that you will be aware of them and possibly begin to build up a library of amazon books.
Whether all of this has actually be clear until competitors begin to drop out of the market but what is clear is that the Kindle has an advantage over its competitors at the moment.
