Dorm rooms are small and must be shared, so planning what to bring is sometimes a problem. You don’t want to be over-crowded, but essential items must be packed for this extended time away from home. Coordinate with your roommate if possible so that you don’t end up with 2 little refrigerators and 2 microwaves. Check the campus website to be sure that any equipment you bring along is allowed. Spend some time to create a checklist so you don’t forget important items.
Body care:
Bath towels and washcloths, flip-flops for the shower room, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc. are all vital. Pack a shower kit you can easily carry in and out of a shared space. Make a list of personal shower items you have used this week, and pack them.
Bedding:
You’ll need a couple of sets of sheets and pillow cases, plus your favorite pillow. Don’t forget to bring a mattress pad.
Health and beauty aids:
Make a list of any medications you take and bring an adequate supply. Also make sure you have your insurance card and a list of any allergies. Bring headache remedies, eyedrops, glasses or contact lenses with plenty of care supplies, Q tips, vitamins and antacid. Visit your doctor well before you leave and make sure all your immunizations are up to date.
Weather Modifiers
OK, so you can’t make the sun shine. So bring along your raincoat, umbrella, jackets, a good winter coat, gloves and head gear if you’ll be in a cold climate, and boots.
For Dorm Life:
You’ll want a robe and slippers, pajamas, and other night-time comforts.
Clothes:
If you’ve worn it in the last month, you’ll probably want it at school. If not, it’s a matter of judgment. Be sure to pack enough underwear and socks to last for at least 2 weeks, in case you don’t have time to do the laundry. You’ll also need detergent, softener, a hamper or clothes basket, and plenty of quarters.
Don’t forget the paper, pencils, sharpener, pens, highlighters, Post It notes, paper clips, tape, notebooks, index cards, markers, calendar, student planner, stapler and plenty of staples.
Computer and supplies:
You’ll need a laptop that is recommended by the school you plan to attend (check their web site) and light enough to carry around, a printer and ink cartridges, and lots of paper. You’ll also need flash drives so you can work on computers in the library. Don’t forget your surge protector.
Comforts and necessaries for the dorm room:
You’ll need and alarm clock and a watch. A lamp for studying and a rug to warm the floor will come in handy. You’ll want your cell phone and maybe a small camera. Some stuff to make the dorm feel homey, like pictures of friends and family. Snacks for when you get the munchies. Peanut butter and jelly and a loaf of bread or some crackers can take you through a long evening of study. Or pack some nuts and fruit. Keep anything that might attract mice or other pests in airtight plastic or glass containers, or store it in the refrigerator.
Make your first year of college a time of good memories, friendships, success in classes, and comfort. Pack those things you will need to use in your home away from home.
