Factors that impact academic success in high school

Academic success in high school is more under the control of the student than they might first imagine. As a principal, and former teacher, college education professor and at-risk program director, I have seen many methods used to gain success. Despite the different paths that students take to succeed, there are some commonalities that unite these various approaches. Here are some key elements to success in high school.

Get a Routine:

Regardless of whether someone does homework at night, in the morning, during lunch, or any other time, developing a routine that is consistent and gets positive results is key. The important thing as a teacher or parent is not to try to impose your routine on your student. What works for one may not be the best approach for another. Some like the music on when they study, others like to hit the books in a vacuum. Regardless, a routine holds students accountable to themselves to manage time and expectations effectively.

Get Involved:

Studies show that kids who are involved in activities of some sort, do better academically. While it may seem counter intuitive, students make social connections, are forced to budget their time, and have more desire to succeed in a system of which they feel more a part. By signing up for sports, clubs, music, drama, honor society, or any other offering a school might provide, kids stay more connected and accountable to not let down those they care about.

Parental Involvement:

Let's be blunt. It does not say parent OVER involvement. Parents who do not take an active part in their child's education, even if it is the role of encourager, supporter, or accountability police, are doing them a disservice. Even high schoolers need SOME guidance when things get a bit overwhelming. Kids DO need to stand on their own two feet, or else they will never walk on their own after leaving home, but that does not mean that parents should cut all school ties simply because their student can drive and function self-sufficiently.  Occasional contacts with teachers, coaches, and administrators can't hurt, even if it is to share good news and positive comments. Just knowing that their parents are behind them gives most students the confidence to finish their academic careers successfully.

Avoid Chemicals:

Nothing kills success faster than chemical use. Alcohol is a drug every bit as much as pot or ecstasy. Kids who fool themselves into thinking they can "experiment" or "handle" such behavior have not learned from the millions that have preceded them on the same path. High school students need to realize that fun is not tied to these substances, but rather in the PEOPLE they are with, and the camaraderie that well -run schools can provide. Chemical users are 7 times more likely to drop out of high school. That sums it up.

By having a routine, being involved, convincing parents to participate, and avoiding chemical use, students have an excellent chance at academic success, regardless of their circumstances or environment. Best of luck to all the students who read this.
