Basic tips for successful affiliate marketing

As an affiliate marketer, it is your job to provide prospective customers with a link to online stores and businesses. In return, you will be paid either a percentage of sales or a flat fee by the merchant to whom you have directed consumers. Many people are finding this to be one of the most profitable of online businesses. Indeed, it can be, but there are steps you must take in order to succeed. Here are some basic tips for the affiliate marketer.

Research

What successful entrepreneur ever started a business without doing his homework? Becoming an affiliate marketer is easy. You can simply sign up with any of the numerous programs such as Amazon Affiliates or eBay, but this alone won’t generate a sizeable income. You must become web savvy in the ways of promotion. It is not possible to drive traffic to another site if you don’t have any of your own. Launching your business before you have learned such terms as rss directories and social bookmarking is a waste of energy.

Prepare to work hard

A lot of people grow disillusioned with the business of affiliate marketing after just a few weeks. This is usually due to them having been under the impression they were going to do very little work and see a lot of money overnight. The reality is that you’ll get out of this venture what you put into it. If you want to be an affiliate fulltime, you should be willing to put in a minimum of forty hours a week. Those looking to supplement their income with part time work should put in no less than twenty.

Keep the cost low

Overhead will kill any new business. It is fortunate that there is very little startup cost in affiliate marketing. Rather than pay to start your own website, there are many free opportunities to promote your products. You can start a free blog at blogger.com, or write online articles where you can place links advertising the products you are selling. Also, post comments on any articles you find that are related to the product you are promoting. Include a backlink. Forums are also a good place to post links. Most sites don’t mind so long as your comment is useful and not solely for the purpose of self-promotion.

Emails

Those online companies that offer to pay the average person to read or send emails do so because this is a powerful marketing strategy. Begin compiling an email list of the people you already know and create a newsletter to market your business. Then make a pledge to make ten new contacts each week. As your number of subscribers grows, so will your sales. Beware, however, an email list should never be purchased from an outside source. Purchased lists are regarded as spam.

Give non-conventional methods a try

Entrepreneurs are often bold and creative in their efforts to succeed. Myspace got off the ground when its creators went out into the streets and offered random people $5 to try the site. So much for keeping the costs low, but if you are imaginative you might conceive a unique marketing strategy that will capture the public’s attention. Anything goes, so think outside the box.
