Edecrin is a prescription only loop-diuretic (water pill). Its generic name is ethacrynic acid. This drug acts on the loop of henle in human nephrons and excretes excess water and salt. This medication is prescribed to remove edema fluid and to reduce blood pressure. Main side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances and dry mouth.

Loop diuretics inhibit re-absorption of salt and water from the ascending limb of the loop of henle. They are powerful diuretics. So over dosage of loop diuretics like Edecrin can cause serious electrolyte imbalance like hypokalemia (reduced potassium levels in blood).

What are the Main side effects?

Most common side effects are gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea/vomiting. Increased uric acid concentration and gout are reported in some patients. Serious electrolyte imbalance with reduced sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium can occur with this medication. PH value of the blood can sometimes increase and metabolic alkalosis can occur. This will further reduce calcium levels in the blood. Reduced blood calcium levels can cause a condition called tetany.

 Rarely patients can get pins and needles in hands and legs. Some patients rarely get tinnitus and deafness. Allergic reactions like hives, rashes and anaphylaxis can occur. If a patient develops wide spread hives, faintishness and skin peeling off from the body then medical help should be sought right away. Some patients can get red patches in the skin and increased sensitivity to light (photo-sensitivity). Patients should consult their doctor if these problems occur.

 Accumulation of bile inside the liver and increased cholesterol levels in blood are reported very rarely. Inflammation and destruction of the pancreas is sometimes reported with certain patients, severe abdominal pain is the usual presenting feature.

Sometimes reduced white blood cell counts can occur with Edecrin. This can be due to bone marrow suppression (decreased production of all the blood cell types) or increased destruction of red blood cells in the circulation. The Patient can have anemia, increased bleeding tendency and infections as a result of this.

What the doctor should know before prescribing Edecrin?

Before prescribing Edecrin the doctor should know patient’s complete medical history including over the counter medication he/she is currently on. This medication can cause serious problems in patients with

* Enlarged prostate

* Dehydration

* Liver failure

* Kidney failure

With this medication, certain patients with diabetes mellitus can have problems with their blood sugar control.

Edecrin is available as tablets as well as intravenous injections. Tablets should be taken as a whole with a full glass of water to minimize side effects. Although food slightly lowers the absorption of this drug, tablets can be taken without regard to the meals. Intravenous injection is used to get a rapid action.
