How to encourage children to be healthy

by Kirsten Hines

Created on: September 03, 2010

With today’s technology: computers, video games and MP3 players children staying healthy has become more challenging than ever. In addition process foods, fast food, and frozen dinners are more mainstream than ever. To keep your children healthy the easiest thing to do, is lead by example.

Healthy parents

Children mimic their parents from the youngest of ages. If you live a healthy and active lifestyle, your children will do the same. By exercising and eating healthy, your children will learn from your example. If you don’t, it is time to start showing your children how to live healthy.

Play outside

It is easy to come home after work and want to kick off your shoes and relax in front of the television to find out the sports scores of the day. Instead, put on your sneakers and take the kids outside. Play catch, wiffle ball or go for a bike ride. Enjoying play time with your kids will keep them active and create a healthy habit.

Enroll in a sports program

Find a sport your child is interested in. It will take a few tries but allow your child to find something that they enjoy so they will stick to it. Organized sports are a great way to keep your child active, teaching teamwork and respect for others. As your child grows older having friends with similar passions and values is important.

Family dinner

The family dinner for many people no longer exists. Make it a point to sit down with the entire family as often as possible. Serve a delicious balance meal for all to eat. Your children will see the example you are setting and follow suit.

Healthy snacks

When grocery shopping be mindful of items you purchase. Don’t fill the cart with sugar filled snacks and junk food. Instead have fruits, vegetables and high fiber choices. If the junk is not in the house, your child will not have the choice to select it.

Tween to Teenage years

When your children start to become young adults it is important to educate them about upcoming pressures they may experience from their peers. This is the age where drugs and alcohol start to become more prevalent in a child’s life. Teaching your child how to deal with these issues is extremely important to help them make good choices.

This is the same for sexual health. The school will touch upon these facts, but coming from the parent will make a difference. Teaching your child important life lessons are part of parenting.  Giving your child the tools necessary to do the right thing is essential.

Children grow up way too fast. As a parent leading by example and talking to them about the important issues in life, will help your child grow to a happy healthy adult.
