Sad, but true, wedding receptions can be prime targets for thieves. Most of the guests and wedding party are too busy having a good time to pay attention to wedding crashers with devious motives. Thieves could potentially mingle into the crowd undetected, waiting for an opportunity to siphon off some of the gifts without being noticed. As reprehensible as this might sound - it does happen.
Seasoned thieves know that inside those gaily wrapped packages could be some very expensive items, and the envelopes strewn about on the gift table often contain sizable sums of cash along with their congratulatory messages.
It is possible to prevent potential wedding gift theft without casting a shadow on an otherwise joyous occasion. By considering the possibility of theft in advance and taking some strategic precautionary measures you can mitigate the possibility of thieves enjoying success at the expense of the newlyweds and their generous guests.
* Establish a gift registry
Most stores these days have a gift registry where the newlyweds can select items they desire. Many guests might take advantage of this convenience and choose from the bridal couple’s list, having the item gift-wrapped and safely delivered directly to the home of the bride by UPS, courtesy of the registry.
* Location of gift table
For guests who prefer to show up at the wedding with a gift in hand, there is generally a gift table located in the reception hall. Ensure to have the gift table placed against a wall, so it can only be approached from the front, and in clear view of everyone. Assign a trusted friend or family member to keep an eye on the gift table to ensure it remains intact and undisturbed throughout the event.
* Have a receptacle for envelops
To prevent envelops from becoming strewn about or misplaced, fashion a receptacle specifically for them and place it in the center of the gift table.. Some families make or purchase a decorated wishing well with a slot to insert the envelopes. This is a good idea, for using an open container, such as a basket, leaves the contents vulnerable to sticky fingers.
* Hire a security guard
For large receptions where there are hundreds of guests, and potentially alcohol served, it is wise to employ an undercover professional security guard. He can keep a watchful eye on the gifts and the crowd, to ward off any potential mishaps.
For smaller receptions with fewer guests, you might prevail upon a trusted friend or relative to keep a watchful eye on things to ensure the joyful occasion is not marred by any negative incident, including thievery.
* Transporting the gifts
Designate trusted family members or friends to transport the gift after the event. Wait until all the guests have dispersed in order to avoid any offers for help or confusion of any sort. You will want at least three individuals to carry out this task; one standing by the gift table, one carrying the gifts to the transport vehicle and one remaining by the vehicle until the job is done.
All of this precautionary activity can take place in a subtle manner that does not interfere with the festive mood of the occasion. It is far better to be safe than sorry. How disheartening for both the bridal couple and their guests if some unsavory characters were allowed to abscond with the gifts intended to honor the couple and give them a good start to their bright future together.
