Before the credit card and payday loans not too many people were spending more than they could afford. Today, we are able to “buy now and pay later”. As a result, many people are in debt. There is a way to stop overspending. It will require maintaining a budget, changing how you handle you money and looking for ways to save on products and services. How successful you are will depend on how badly you want it and how hard you work at it.
How Much Can You Really Afford
The first thing you need to do is determine just how much you can afford. One of the easiest ways to do this is to track every payment, purchase and cash withdraw for a month. Don’t change your spending habit yet, be honest and include everything no matter the amount. At the end of the month compare what you spent to your monthly income. Was your living expenses more than your income? Did you pay hundreds of dollars for credit card payments? Did you have to borrow money from friends and family until payday? Now you know how you spent your money and are ready to stop spending more than you can afford.
Manage a Monthly Budget
Most people think a budget is a document for tracking planned living expenses only. Actually, a budget is used for expenses and revenues. It is a plan for how you save and spend your income. There are books, software and templates available at bookstores or online to help you set up your budget. Maintaining the budget will force you to carefully plan how your revenue (your income) is allocated to not spendi more than you have. Once you have created your budget, try it out for a month. At the end of the thirty days make any additional changes or start over. Try different idea for developing a budget that works for you.
Stop Using Credit Cards and Payday Loans
Using credit cards and payday loan is spending someone else’s money. Not only must you pay back the money you borrowed but also an additional amount. Just think about all the money you could save if you were not using these types of financial tools. If you are serious about not spending more than you have, it would be best to stop using your credit cards. If you have more than one, you can always cut them up except for one to be used only in case of an emergency. Pay off any credit card accounts or loans as soon as you can.
