One of the best horror films of the past decade (in my honest opinion) has to be Splinter.
It has blood, suspense, thrill, mystery, gore, frightening images, plus a ton of other amazing horror film attributes. The movie Splinter has basically everything you would want to find in a horror film.
I would rate this movie an 8 out of 10. I give it an 8 rather than a 9 or 10 for it's slowness. Despite the beginning attack scene, the movie starts out fairly slow. About an eighth into the film there is also a hostage scene, but it is not very horror-film-esque. Until about the middle of the movie the scenes are played out very chill.
Another reason for a lower rating is the actors. In my opinion the female actors weren't quite up to par. Lacey (Rachel Kerbs) was psychotic, and Polly (Jill Wagner) was a bit bland. The bad guy, Dennis (Shea Whigham), lived up to his role, especially when he held Polly and her boyfriend Seth hostage. Seth (Paulo Costanzo) also did a great job as a curious medical student.
There were a few things that I did like about this film. First of all the suspense factor, and wondering what would happen if someone got attacked by one of the spiked parasites. I also liked that there were not many characters in the film. There were the four main characters, a sheriff, and the male that got attacked in the beginning. Some films don't work out so well when there are not that many characters, but Splinter does very well.
I also liked the level of freakishness brought with the Splinter parasites. They were so demented and disgusting, but that is what makes this film such a thriller. I only wish that they could have added a bit more special effects throughout the film then they did. Despite that, it is still a fantastic horror film.
This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart, or those who get freaked out easily. The Splinter parasites are really creepy, even to me (someone who loves horror films).
However, if you are a horror buff you will not be disappointed with this film. I suggest though that you see for yourself and then decide.
