The wonder of nature can often be taken for granted in modern society. But the tranquility of a garden can have a major impact on lifting one's spirits.
Gardens are calming places. A place to soothe the soul. However depressed one may feel after a bereavement or the end of a love affair, a garden can transport us to another place.
My own personal experiences regarding the end of relationships have been hard to bear, but a spring or summer's day in a garden full of vibrant life and color have always tended to lift my melancholic spirits.
As a young man of 25, an experience of unrequited love left me broken, and I saw no relief, but looking around and seeing bees and butterflies busily going about their business made me realize that their lives are short and so are ours. Enjoy what you've got, and treasure it. A garden mirrors life in the way it changes through the seasons. Spring is like the beginning of life or love, and winter is like its end.
We have to enjoy the moments we have on this Earth, and there's no better way of doing so than walking around a beautiful garden - or even an unkept one come to that!
