Created on: August 31, 2010

Without question, the Beagle is one of the most beloved dog breeds of all time. It is no mystery why this breed is so popular to man; the Beagle is one of the friendliest dogs in existence. Even the fictional character “Snoopy” was based upon a Beagle. However, there is more to this breed than its friendly nature. Following is some additional information regarding the Beagle.

Origin of the Beagle

During Elizabethan times, breeders crossed the Harrier with some ancient English hounds. The end result was the modern Beagle.

Physical Appearance of the Beagle

This breed looks strikingly similar to the Harrier, but with shorter legs. This active dog usually reaches between 13 to 16 inches in height. The Beagle is a small to medium-sized dog, weighing in between 18 and 30 pounds. The black nose and developed nostrils are distinguishing characteristics of this breed. The skull is dome-shaped and the muzzle is quite pointed. Eyes are usually a shade of chestnut or hazel. The ears are long and dangle against the cheeks. The neck is rather long and slender. The Beagle maintains round and sturdy feet. There are two major types of Beagles: One with a smooth coat and one with a rough coat. This dog comes in a variety of colors. Beagles can be blue with black tiger, white, black, orange or tricolor.

The Beagle’s Personality

This breed is usually cheerful, tranquil and affectionate with its master. The Beagle is known for its harmonious voice.

Uses of the Beagle

This breed was originally used for the hunting of hare, pheasant and quail. However, the Beagle has even been known to catch fish. In addition to its uses as a hunting dog, the hound is also highly esteemed as a companion breed. There is a variety of miniature Beagles known as Elisabeth Beagles. They are usually only 12 inches high and weigh just 22 pounds. The Elisabeth Beagles are used for hunting as well.

Overall, the Beagle makes an excellent pet for families with children. This dog is esteemed as one of the best breeds for kids. Due to their affectionate nature, most Beagles would prefer to live indoors with the family. This dog loves swimming and following scents with its nose. If you choose to own a Beagle, be prepared to bathe your dog often. Beagles love to follow their noses and roll in whatever scents they come across.
