It's surprisingly easy to become an aerobics instructor. And imagine getting paid while keeping yourself fit. Just like losing weight, the most important step is to really want it. That will give you the motivation you need to stick with all of the other steps!
Obviously you could practice by just rounding up some friends, and conducting free aerobics classes informally out of your apartment. But what you want is an aerobics facility, equipped with a mat, any exercise props, and especially nearby showers. So at some point, you're going to have to approach your neighborhood gyms, and ask them if they're interested in your aerobics classes. A gym may actually be looking for an aerobics instructor, and will even help with publicity to bring you more customers!
But if a gym is interested in an aerobics instructor, you'll want to make sure you have all of the qualifications that they're looking for. Many gyms prefer that their employees be trained in CPR, so you might want to complete a quick training class. (Check to see if they're being offered by your local Red Cross.) In fact, if you complete a full first-aid training session - which can be completed in less than a day - you might end up with an even more impressive set of qualifications.
Some gyms will also appreciate it if you've also been certified as an aerobics instructor. There's a couple of different organizations that offer certification programs. The American Council on Exercise, which offers training programs for nearly every kind of personal fitness trainer. It's an exciting moment when you've finally been certified, because it completes the formal procedure for making your dream a reality.
Of course, the easiest way to get work as an aerobics instructor is to take over the class of another aerobics instructor. Many would be glad to have a "substitute teacher," which gives them much more flexibility in their own schedule. You might approach some of the aerobics instructors that you've worked with already, since you'll have some familiarity with their routines and their workout style. Being an aerobics instructor can be physically demanding, so you might get a surprisingly enthusiastic response if you can offer them a way to take a break! This is the most important steps in becoming an aerobics instructor, or in finding any new position: networking. Talk to people who work in the field, and don't be afraid to approach new people who might be able to help you with your dream.
