Kart racing is a popular motor sport, as it is one of the most inexpensive ways to experience competitive racing. The machines are also less complicated than those used in other motor sports, which enables a wider participation. Go karts are typically open-wheeled vehicles, powered by small engines. They are light-weight, usually about 73kg (160lb), but even so, can reach a speed of 160kph (100mph). Another reason for the popularity of this sport is because drivers can learn the basics of racing techniques in a fairly safe environment, as the skills learned are similar to those used in all other kinds of motor sports.
This is an entry-level sport, where more depends on the driver's ability than on the machine's specifications. The machines are constructed of tubular steel, with simplified engines that don't require as much maintenance as the larger, more expensive engines that are used for other motor sports. To take part in a Go-kart race takes a lot of courage on the part of the driver. The small size, manoeuvrability of the machines, and the high speed, means that the driver has to exercise keen judgement to skim close to the track barrier, or the apex of a corner, when pushing his vehicle to its limits. Good driving technique has a major part to play in successful kart racing, and many driving superstars started at this level.
Kart races run on similar tracks to any other motor sport, and take on a similar form, in that there are sprints, circuits and even speedway events. However, sprints usually last for one lap only, and circuit and endurance racing rules will vary depending on the class of vehicle and type of race. Some karting endurance competitions run vehicles continuously for up to 24 hours, although they will use two or more drivers per vehicle.
Go-kart racing is not just an outdoor sport. Battery operated vehicles now enable the sport to be run on indoor tracks, as they don't emit toxic fumes like gas-powered ones do. Go-karting indoors generates just as much fun and excitement as the outdoor sport. It still needs the same amount of skill and dedication, and produces the same number of thrills and spills as its outdoor equivalent.
Although this might appear to be a male-dominated sport, it is a sport for everyone, men, women, boys and girls. The minimum age for participants is eight-years of age. Go-kart racing is relatively safe when compared with other motor sports, and injuries are usually minor ones. This makes it a good family sport as it is comparatively inexpensive, everyone can take part, and its a great way to learn to drive.
