Why movie tickets are getting more expensive

by Michael Fox

Created on: August 30, 2010

Everyone is paying more money to go to the movies these days. It can be boiled down to a good number of factors:

1. The studios are losing money. The studios have not gotten as much money as they should have been getting. While it is true that studios are blaming things like the economy and piracy a big factor for this might have something to deal with the quality of the movies in question. There have been so many bad movies over the past few years that fewer people are interested in going to see them. Films like Clash of the Titans, the Last Airbender and the Sorcerer's Apprentice are very good example of this. These are all films that were commercial and critical failures alike.

2. Movies are becoming too expensive to make. The studios are spending loads of money on movies with no guarantees that these movies are going to be successful. It is getting to the point where movies are taking more gambles on their films. Sometimes they work - Inception cost $160 million to make and it has more than surpassed that total. Sometimes they don't - it is doubtful that Scott Pilgrim vs. the World will get half its $60 million budget reached at the box office. Therefore, it only makes sense that studios are pressuring movie theaters to charge more for their tickets.

3. Movie theater operators need money. They may as well jack up the price in order to get more. After all, there are too many people out there who are dealing with economic troubles and are not as willing to go to the movies. Theaters might as well milk whoever goes to these shows for whatever they want.

4. 3D movies make 2D movies more expensive to go to as well. Movie theaters are spending a great deal of money on getting 3D projectors ready. They are raising ticket prices to be able to afford these projectors and all of the 3D glasses needed for these films. Even 2D films are becoming expensive because of this.

5. General greed? Money makes the world go around more than ever. Some studios are too afraid to cut costs and will go as far as to raise the prices on what they have in order to protect themselves. Of course this is practically something that is similar to that of what is happening in other economies.
