Promoting a website can be expensive, but for those who are not currently earning the revenue they hope to see in the future, there are numerous opportunities to promote your site for free.
Exchanging links
Exchanging links with other websites is often one of the most lucrative strategies for promoting your website, especially if you link to a high ranking site. Many sites don’t mind, as you will be promoting them in turn. Many will offer the option of linking to their site in their footer.
RSS Feeds
One of the first things you should do for your site is to submit your RSS feed to directories and social bookmarking sites. This will immediately increase the relevancy Google gives to your site, but don’t forget other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo. Resubmit on a regular basis, but no more than once a week or you will likely be spammed.
Join online communities
Whatever product or service your website deals in, there is likely an online community site for people interested in the subject. For example, if you are selling classic automobiles, a site that is dedicated to those who collect classic cars probably exists. You can post comments that include a link to your website in their Forum.
Twitter, Facebook and Myspace
There is a reason so many businesses are creating accounts on these social sites. They generate word of mouth and Twitter provides a highly relevant backlink that Google does not ignore. Also, when someone does add you as a friend or choose to follow you, they will be kept updated on any new products or services you add to your site in the future.
Writing online articles
Like Twitter, content sites such as Ezine provide the chance to create backlinks that Google considers valuable. Write an article for Ezine on a topic that is related to your own website. Create a backlink within the article that will lead back to your site and you have instant promotion. Don't be discouraged if you do not consider yourself a professional journalist. The fact that you have a website suggests that you possess the basic writing skills and creativity you'll need.
SEO
Choose the right keywords and your blogs, to some degree, will promote themselves. There is no way around it. SEO reins in cyberspace. Research it. Learn to use it, as it is not likely to go away anytime soon. Being successful online requires a certain degree of web savvy, but if you do your homework you will find it isn’t all as complicated as it seems
